Spectacular! 2018

Spectacular! 2018 had Colbie Caillat as the featured guest joined by singer-songwriter David Archuleta performing at Brigham Young University’s Marriott Center as part of BYU Homecoming 2018. The show also included a selection of BYU’s talented performing groups, including Vocal Point, Cougarettes, Living Legends, Young Ambassadors, Syncopation, Synthesis, and Women’s Chorus.

I had the pleasure of designing the projections for the full 90 minute show. The vibe of the show driven mostly by the performers and the music was bright, positive, and happy, this was reflected in the designs and the vibrant color palate of the projections. And the overall look and feel I wanted to be slightly retro and tangible, like old vinyl album cover art. My lovely wife and I used a variety of analogue tools, methods, and textures as much as possible to achieve this. From hand drawn elements mixed with real paper and dust textures to stop motion animated origami paper love notes. There is a running motif of sunshine, moon, and stars in most every number. And a handful of them have some Polynesian patterns to them which I think feel fun and playful, it also fits into Colbie’s beach and summertime style.
